Welcome to Zoukency Augsburg!
Zouk – The Dance from Brasil
Zouk is characterised by its round, flowing movements with waves and cambrés, which vary in speed with the expression of the music. Zouk dancers appreciate the feeling of flow, connection, expression, sensuality, playful richness and versatility.
The dance evolved from lambada, which was very popular in the early 90s. At the end of the 90s, Brazilian Lambada dancers discovered the rhythms of the Creole music style "Zouk" and called their dance Zouk (pronounced "suuk") as well. In order to distinguish it from the music, "Brazilian" is sometimes added to the dance, i.e. "Zouk Brasileiro" in Portuguese and "Brazilian Zouk" in English. Zouk in its current form is danced mainly to R&B, pop, oriental, and slow reggaeton. Inspired by new music, the dance is constantly evolving.
Years ago, it started with Ballroom classes. One day we discovered West Coast Swing, which we still dance and teach with passion. With a strong focus on lead and follow in West Coast Swing, we quickly progressed in Zouk and it caught us like a fever after a short while.
Through teacher & judging trainings with Kadu Pires and Larissa Thayanne-Frisbee we were able to build up a fundamental knowledge. In the meantime - many, many training hours later - we have decided to build up a lively Zouk scene here in Augsburg.
